Invitation to the Interparliamentary Conference on Economic and Financial

Governance of the European Union on 16–17 October 2013

Dear Colleagues,In our position as Chairs of the Committee on Budget and Finance and the Committee onEconomics of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, we are honoured to extend ourinvitation to you to the inaugural meeting of the interparliamentary conference underArticle 13 of the Treaty on Stability, Coordination and Governance in the Economic andMonetary Union to be held on 16–17 October 2013 in the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuaniain Vilnius. We propose to call the new conference, established by the decision of theConference of Speakers of the European Union Parliaments held in Nicosia on 23 April 2013,the Interparliamentary Conference on Economic and Financial Governance of the EuropeanUnion.The Interparliamentary Conference will focus on the most topical issues related to theeconomic and financial governance of the European Union. We will debate on setting theright framework for post-crisis economic and financial governance, on how to restoreeconomic growth in Europe and will attempt to evaluate the progress in the creation of thebanking union, in achieving budgetary consolidation and in implementing structural reformsin the EU Member States most affected by the crisis.You are cordially invited to the dinners with cultural programme on 16 and 17 October 2013.Please note that the Conference of Speakers of the European Union Parliaments in Nicosiaagreed that the new conference should consist of representatives of relevant committees fromall the national Parliaments of the Member States of the European Union and the EuropeanParliament. The Speakers of the European Union Parliaments also decided that “the newmechanism could be built upon the formula of the Conference on CFSP and CSDP, replacingthe meetings of the Chairpersons of relevant Committees, organised by each Presidency, thusrendering it cost-effective. The composition and size of each delegation rests upon eachParliament.”
