Invitation to participate in a Seminar on
“Traceability and fully documented fishery as a management toolâ€
Purpose:Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â The purpose of the seminar is to present and discuss how traceability and electronic monitoring systems can contribute to reliable documentation of fisheries. While traceability serves as the platform for the flow of information regarding catch weight and composition, catch area and discards, the monitoring should ensure a high degree of reliability of the information.
The seminar will focus on methods and experiences in electronic monitoring of fishing activities. It will present Canadian experiences and the Danish experiment which is expected to start 1. July 2008.
The seminar will also discuss possibilities of involving the fishing industry in collection of detailed fishing data thereby ensuring the fishing industry responsibility in providing true basic data for the scientific advice.
Finally the seminar opens a discussion on perspectives in relation to a new EU management paradigm. Can the present CFP of “regulation and control†be supplemented by a policy of “incentives and documentation†by giving fishermen who retain all catches of fish aboard a bonus equal to the otherwise recognised levels of non-reported catches. Could a simplification of EU controls be build around traceability chains?
