After the new European Commission took office in
2014, several new initiatives were introduced to the
public and the European Union is currently on the
path of creating the legislative framework of these
policy areas, including Energy Union, Digital Single
Market and others. At the same time, the EU is
also facing several challenges calling for
reconsideration of previous strategies. All these
issues will be crucial not only for the Slovak
Presidency, but also for the future of the whole EU.
GLOBSEC TATRA SUMMIT 2016 HIGHLIGHTS

Presidency in the Council of the EU, GLOBSEC

Topics of this year’s edition of GLOBSEC
Tatra
Summit
will include:
1. ENERGY SECURITY
| One of the Commission’s top
priorities is creating a single energy market and
enhancing the energy security which is strongly
connected to reduction of dependency of the member
states on one supplier. With the exception of reliable
Northern countries, European energy security is
exposed to potentially unstable supplies from Russia,
the Middle East and Mediterranean. GLOBSEC Tatra
Summit 2016 will contribute to the discussion on
securing stable transit routes beneficial for the whole
Union.
2.
EUROPEAN
SOLUTIONS
TO
CURRENT
CHALLENGES
| Unprecedented amounts of illegal
migrants are crossing the EU borders every day,
stimulating heated debates among public and political
elites. While we all agree that help must be provided to
those in need, the issue is much more complex. It
touches many policy areas – freedom of movement,
asylum policy, protection of external borders and
integration of refugees. GLOBSEC Tatra Summit will
focus on the solutions of the crisis across these policy
areas, already implemented measures and evaluation
of their outcomes.
3. SECURITY UNION
| Recent terrorist attacks in Paris
and Brussels reminded us of prevailing weaknesses in
European internal security. Terrorism has a very
dynamic character and operates in transborder and
virtual space. In order to maintain the area of freedom
of movement, sharing of intelligence and stronger
cooperation of agencies in countering terrorism
becomes essential. GLOBSEC Tatra Summit will
discuss necessary steps to be taken in order to fight
radicalisation and protect European security.
4. FUTURE OF TRANSATLANTIC RELATIONS
AFTER U.S. ELECTIONS
| In recent years Europe and
the United States have not worked so closely in the
area of security nor economy. Challenges which the
U.S. and EU are facing might seem diverse, however,
none of the powers are able to solve these problems
alone and cooperation is inevitable. Moreover, the
conference will also discuss the future of the
Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership
between the United States and the EU which could be
one of the most important milestones in shaping the
global trade system.
5. ECONOMIC AND MONETARY UNION – OUR
COMMON FUTURE
| Recovering from the financial and
currency crisis, the EMU reform is currently underway.
The course has been set by the Five Presidents‘ Report
calling for deeper integration, common fiscal tools and
economic coordination, although it is not definite that
this will indeed be the final course. Top EMU
stakeholders will exchange their views on the future of
the EMU while trying to find a common route to the
stability of the common currency.
