Mr Karmenu Vella
Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries
Inquiry regarding a possible ban on import
and sale of new petrol and diesel cars in
Denmark
Dear Mr Vella
The European Affairs Committee of the Danish Parliament has recently ex-
amined the European Commission’s legislative proposals on the setting of
emission performance standards for new passenger cars and for new heavy-
duty vehicles, which aim to reduce CO2 emissions.
The proposals are important and ambitious contributions to the planned re-
duction of greenhouse gas emissions, as set out in the Paris climate agree-
ment and the EU’s post-2020
emission targets. However, in Denmark the
possibility of introducing measures that are even more ambitious, has been
discussed among political parties.
As part of the established political dialogue with the European Commission,
the European Affairs Committee would therefore like to submit the following
inquiry to the European Commission:
“Under
what conditions would it be compatible with existing EU law to intro-
duce a ban on import and marketing of new petrol and diesel cars in Den-
mark?”
On behalf of the Danish European Affairs Committee, I hope the Commission
will be able to respond to this inquiry as soon as possible.
